Vitamin D

We routinely check Vitamin D levels before surgery. If your levels came back low, a prescription will be sent to your pharmacy or directly to you for high dose (50,000 unit) vitamin D capsules. Depending on your level, you should take one or two capsules weekly, according to the instructions sent with the prescription.

Vitamin D is essential for your metabolism, bone mineralization. The absorption of vitamin D is compromised after gastric bypass, therefore it is of outmost importance to have a normal level at the time of surgery. If your levels were low, you may be asked to continue your vitamin D capsules in addition to the daily Calcium + D tablets, you will take after surgery. Spend at least 10-15 minutes a day at sunlight as well.

We will check your vitamin D level periodically after surgery and sometimes, even with very compliant regular vitamin intake, a deficiency is diagnosed. Yet, in compliant patients it is extremely rare to find critically low vitamin D levels.
