Education

Andras Sandor, M.D., F.A.C.S., F.A.S.M.B.S. was born in Budapest, Hungary and he obtained his medical diploma at the Semmelweis University of Budapest in 1992.

Research

After the initial surgical training at the Imre Haynal University of Health Sciences of Budapest, Dr. Sandor spent 3 years as a postdoctoral associate at the Department of Surgery of Yale Medical School studying the pathobiology of carcinoid tumors. Following this, he joined the then newly established UMASS EndoSurgery Center in 1997 and completed a 2 year research fellowship in advanced laparoscopic surgery. He served as Teaching Faculty in the Learning Center of the Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES) in 1998 and 1999.

Postgraduate training

Dr. Sandor completed his training in general surgery at the University of Massachusetts Medical School in Worcester, Massachusetts. In the final year of his general surgical residency, Dr. Sandor served as Chief Resident in Surgery between 2003 and 2004.

Dr. Sandor also completed a clinical fellowship in Advanced Laparoscopic and Bariatric Surgery at the University of Massachusetts under the guidance of Demetrius E.M. Litwin, M.D and John J. Kelly, M.D.

Board certification

Dr. Sandor is a Board Certified by the American Board of Surgery. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a Fellow of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery.

Clinical Interests

Laparoscopic weight loss surgery

Dr. Sandor is the founder and director of the Commonwealth Surgical Associates Weight Loss Surgery Program. Dr. Sandor and the CSA Weight Loss Surgery Program were designated a Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence by the American Society for Metabolic andBariatric Surgery.
Currently the program offers laparoscopic Roux-Y gastric bypass, sleeve gastrectomy and adjustable gastric banding with either the LapBand™ system or the Realize™ Band.

Advanced laparoscopic surgery

In addition to laparoscopic bariatric surgery, Dr. Sandor's current areas of interest is focused primarily on advanced laparoscopic procedures.
These include laparoscopic splenectomy, adrenalectomy, laparoscopic antireflux procedures, laparoscopic hiatal hernia repair, laparoscopic ventral and inguinal hernia repair, laparoscopic cholecystectomy, laparoscopic common bile duct exploration, laparoscopic feeding tube placement and laparoscopic small and large bowel surgery.
