Academic Pursuits:
Dr. Brown is involved on a daily basis in the teaching of medical students from the Tufts University School of Medicine and surgical residents from Tufts Medical Center.
In addition to this, he has been involved in teaching other surgeons new
techniques for Abdominal Wall Component Separation to repair complex
hernias.

Background
Education
Dr. Mathew Brown was born and raised in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He
graduated from Michigan State University College of Human Medicine, and
completed his General Surgery Residency in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Dr. Brown was commissioned in the United Stated Air Force in 2001 and served
four years in reserved status and three years in active duty as a Major and
Surgeon at Kirtland Air Force Base in Albuquerque.
While in the Air Force, Dr. Brown was on staff for University New Mexico
Hospital participating in their Trauma Program and resident education.
Board Certification
Dr. Brown is board certified in General Surgery and a member in the
American Society of Breast Surgeons, Mastery of Breast Surgery Program, and
American Hernia Society.
Clinical Interests
General Surgery
Dr. Brown surgical practice encompasses a full range of general surgical
procedures, including endoscopy (gastroscopy and colonoscopy), laproscopic
surgery (colon, gallbladder and hernia surgery) as well as skin cancer
surgery (melanoma).
Breast and Endocrine Surgery
Dr Brown maintains a strong interest in breast and endocrine surgery. He
has regular office hours at the Winchester Breast Care Center and is
participating in forming the Hallmark Health Breast Care Center. He utilizes
state of the art techniques in breast cancer therapy such as ultrasound
guide or sterotactic (mammogram directed) biopsy, oncoplastic
reconstruction, and accelerated partial breast irradiation (A.P.B.I.)
Parathyroid and Thyroid Surgery
Parathyroid and thyroid surgery is accomplished using the Nerve
Monitoring System (N.I.M.) to provide the utmost comfort and safety for
patients undergoing neck endocrine surgery. He is also pioneering minimally
invasive parathyroidectomy using intra-operative Gamma probe localization of
parathyroid adenomas at Hallmark Health Hospital System.
Complex Hernia Surgery
Dr. Brown has considerable experience in abdominal wall reconstructions for complex hernias. He utilizes a wide breath of surgical techniques to repair hernias including laproscopic and traditional open approach. He has one of the largest volume of Abdominal Wall Component Separation for giant ventral hernias at Hallmark Health Hospital System and Winchester Hospital System. He is presently working on the development of the Commonwealth Surgical Associates Hernia Center.
