ADMINISTRATIVE PURSUITSDr. Begos is currently the Chief of
General Surgery at Winchester Hospital, and the Chair of the Endoscopy
Committee at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. He is involved with numerous
hospital committees. He is the director of resident and medical student
rotations at Commonwealth Surgical Associates.

BACKGROUND:Dr. Begos was born and raised in New York. He
graduated from New York Medical College and also spent 2 years studying
in Dublin at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland.
He did his general surgery residency at Yale-New Haven Hospital where he
spent one year doing research in laparoscopy and intestinal wound
healing. He was honored by being named Administrative Chief Resident his
final year there.
After Yale he spent a year doing a fellowship in Colon and Rectal
Surgery at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation in Cleveland, Ohio.
Dr. Begos is board certified in general surgery and colon and rectal
surgery, and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and the
American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons.
CLINICAL INTERESTS:
Dr. Begos’s practice covers the full spectrum of colon and rectal
surgery and general gastrointestinal surgery. He also has an interest in
hernia repair, both inguinal and ventral/incisional hernias, and
minimally invasive (laparoscopic) surgery for hernia repair.
He has a particular interest in surgery for colon and rectal cancer,
especially in sphincter preservation for rectal cancer (surgery without
the need for a permanent colostomy). He also has a strong interest and
considerable experience in laparoscopic colon resections for cancer and
for benign disease such as diverticulitis and colon polyps. He has
published numerous papers on this topic, has spoken at national
meetings, and has taught and supervised other surgeons in laparoscopic
colon surgery.
Dr. Begos also has considerable experience in surgery for inflammatory
bowel disease, including Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. He has
performed numerous laparoscopic bowel resections for patients with
Crohn’s disease, and has performed many restorative proctocolectomies
(J-pouches) for ulcerative colitis.
Other interests include new, less painful techniques for hemorrhoid
surgery such as PPH hemorrhoidectomy, office treatment of hemorrhoids,
surgery for fecal incontinence, surgery for gall bladder disease
(laparoscopic cholecystectomy), and surgery for benign and malignant
gastric diseases.

ACADEMIC PURSUITS:Dr. Begos is involved on a daily basis in the
teaching of medical students from the Tufts University School of Medicine and
surgical residents from Tufts-New England Medical Center, as well as Family
Medicine residents. He has won numerous teaching awards.
In addition to this, he has been involved in teaching other surgeons new
techniques for laparoscopic colectomy, PPH hemorrhoidectomy, and laparoscopic
ventral hernia repair. He has been a preceptor to other surgeons for these
techniques throughout the northeast.
He has spoken at national and local meetings, and given many educational talks
at local hospitals.
Dr. Begos has published numerous papers in peer reviewed journals on topics in
general and colorectal surgery.
